• Soil Mechanics – Course Structure

    Course Objectives:

    • To understand the fundamental behavior of soils under different conditions.

    • To perform soil testing and apply knowledge in civil engineering projects.

    • To interpret soil properties for design and construction.

    Objectives of Soil Mechanics

    1. Understand Soil Behavior

    • Study how soils behave under various loads, moisture conditions, and environmental factors.

    • Analyze soil responses such as settlement, shear strength, and consolidation.

    2. Classify Different Soil Types

    • Identify and classify soils based on particle size, plasticity, and consistency.

    • Use standard soil classification systems (e.g., USCS, AASHTO).

    3. Determine Soil Properties

    • Measure key physical and engineering properties of soil (e.g., specific gravity, moisture content, permeability, density).

    • Perform both laboratory and field tests.

    4. Analyze and Improve Soil Stability

    • Evaluate soil bearing capacity for designing safe foundations.

    • Study slope stability and prevent landslides or earth failures.

    • Apply soil improvement techniques (e.g., compaction, stabilization).
